Production A290’s looks will be toned down a little
ALPINE’S A110 SPORTS car (currently the only model in its line-up) is proof that you don’t always get what you deserve in life. You see, despite being so good that it earned our maximum five-star rating, the A110 has always sold in tiny numbers. Alpine will be hoping for much greater success, then, with its new A290 hot hatch. Previewed in concept form, the A290 is based on the upcoming electric Renault 5. While the concept is powered by two electric motors, the production version is expected to have a single front motor producing about 215bhp and allowing for a 0-60mph time of 6.9sec.Those are similar numbers to its main rival, the Abarth 500e. As for the battery, that’s likely to be a 52kWh unit, which should mean a range of more than 200 miles on a single charge – farther than the 164 miles the 500e officially offers.
