It is not a question of whether Jonny Bairstow was out according to the letter of the law. Yes, he was. It is not even a question of that nebulous concept, the Spirit of Cricket. That does not concern me. I hate Mankads too but that has nothing to do with any spirit.
The issue is that Pat Cummins had a golden opportunity to see the wider picture. He had a great chance to do the right thing by both the Australian team and the wider cricketing world. He should have withdrawn the appeal and called Bairstow back.
