As England prepare to play Test matches against West Indies and Sri Lanka, I feel it is a shame that visiting national teams no longer play first-class matches against the English counties. Those matches sometimes ended with surprising and delightful results, which I am sure many of your readers will remember with great glee.
For example, in 1996 Derbyshire beat India by 10 wickets at Derby, and in 2001 Hampshire beat Australia by two wickets at the Rose Bowl. Going back further in time, the immensely powerful Australian team of 1930 played a thrilling match against Gloucestershire at Bristol which incredibly ended in a tie. Forty-seven-year-old Charlie Parker [above] dismissed Bradman in both innings.
