Catching bullets

Jamie Smith kept to Atkinson and Wood across the Windies series and lived to tell the tale

What was it like keeping to Gus, both of you on debut?

It was amazing. To do that on debut – 12 wickets – was remarkable really. We’ve played together for a few years now, and it’s great to see how he’s gone about his business and grown as a cricketer and a person. We debuted at a similar time even though he was on the staff a few years before, because he was unfortunate with injuries. He’s had a lot of things in his life that he’s had to overcome. It’s a strength of his character that whatever life’s thrown at him, he’s dealt with it superbly. To go out there and produce, not only for one game but to back it up over three games, shows that he can do it and I’m glad he’s had the opportunity to show how good he is.
