FIT GOT REAL
Sport England has launched a new phase of its This Girl Can campaign: Fit Got Real. It aims to tackle inequalities in levels of exercise between different social groups of women.
Its latest study showed women in lower paid, routine jobs are almost twice as likely to be inactive (doing less than 30 minutes of exercise a week) compared to women in senior and managerial roles (33.5 per cent compared to 17.7 per cent). Also women of a South Asian background (36 per cent) and black women (29.4 per cent) are more likely to be inactive than white British women (25.3 per cent).
The campaign is looking to inspire and motivate women with a new film showing real women of different ages and ethnicities doing exercise their own way – from running around a park pushing a child in a pram, hula hooping at home, or teaching themselves how to swim using YouTube. The ambition is to share the message that no matter how unconventional, it all counts as exercise.
