A copy of The Holy Bible, Authorized King James Version, published by the National Bible Press of Philadelphia was sold online in November in a Propstore entertainment memorabilia auction for £387,500. What made this particular instance of the Good Book so desirable to the unnamed purchaser? The fact that it was the copy featured in the now classic prison drama The Shawshank Redemption (1994), adapted from Stephen King’s novella Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, which the main character, Andy Dufresne, played by Tim Robbins, used to hide the rock hammer with which he chipped his way to freedom. The book also includes an inscription written by Andy to the prison’s warden, ‘Salvation lies within’, a reference to a line of dialogue said by the warden to Andy earlier in the film. This Holy Bible is uniquely customised, having part of the inner pages cut away so as to provide a space to conceal the vital rock hammer. The Propstore auction listing noted, ‘Only one rockhammer Bible was finished for the pivotal scene, as the process of cutting the hammer outline was precise and time-consuming. Since production, the Bible has undergone some minor, careful and sympathetic restoration, most notably at the base of the hammer cut-out and inside the cover.’ See the auction listing, including photos, at https://bit.ly/rockhammerbible
