ROMANCE RESONATES
An 80-page Russian novella from 1848 has become an unlikely cult bestseller due to TikTok and Instagram, writes Gary Dalkin.
The work in question is White Nights, by the great novelist Fyodor Dostoevsky, with one bookshop alone, Hatchards in Piccadilly, reporting to have sold 190 copies of the paperback last year. Indeed, White Nights was the fourth bestselling work of literature in translation in the UK in 2024.
