You probably know the comment (usually attributed to Mark Twain) ‘I didn’t have time to write a short letter, so I wrote a long one instead’. Brevity can be difficult to achieve; it’s a problem I could discuss for a long time; sorry… I know. But seriously, brevity’s important to writers, and is a skill worth getting to grips with. I remember reading a book, long ago, called Write Tight (William Brohaugh), and despite a whole book on the subject being a kind of contradiction in terms, I learnt a good deal from it.
