Creative connections
Explore the potential of discovering connections in these writing group exercises from Julie Phillips

NBillions upon billions of different organisms inhabit our planet. But given the huge variety, separated by huge continents and vast expanses of oceans, it is humbling and life affirming to know that we are all connected in some way: we might share part of our genetic code, or have a common ancestor and whether those connections are negative or positive, finding them has great potential for inspiring and boosting writing. This month is all about making connections, even seemingly unlikely or tenuous links, to inform and enhance writing.
Don’t I know you?
As a quick warm up, ask the group to pair up. This works better if they pair up with someone they don’t know all that well. Each pair takes their turn to say something about themselves and see if they can find something in common, a connection they share. Where they were born, grew up, lived, hobbies, jobs, where they shop, etc., are all areas where connections might be found.
