Get creative with projects for a rainy day

Whether you have just a spare couple of hours or a whole weekend, try one of these DIY projects to update your home

If the weather is cold and wet, it’s tempting to stay indoors, so why not make use of this time at home and get stuck in to a practical project? From handy storage to revamping furniture, we’ve chosen a selection of ideas which will help you to unleash your creative side, so read on and take your pick…

Transform a fire surround and tiled hearth

Follow these top tips from Annie Sloan to give your fireplace a brand new look…

1 Before painting directly onto the tiled surface, sketch out a plan of your tiles on a large piece of paper. It does not have to be a perfect drawing, but will be a useful tool for you to play around with colour combinations. On this example we focused on a mid-century modern colour palette, which included English Yellow, Graphite and Aubusson Chalk Paint by Annie Sloan. However more neutral tones work just as well, such as Old Ochre, Duck Egg Chalk Paint or a pop of colour from Scandinavian Pink or Louis Blue Chalk Paint.

2 Once you have perfected your final design, you can start to mask out triangles onto the tiles. For a clean finish, use masking tape in the centre of each tile. Alternatively you can use a small artist’s brush to outline the edge of each colour.

3 If the tiles are very smooth it is best to paint a thinned layer of paint onto each tile first. With a smooth synthetic bristle brush, add a little water to your paint so that it is the consistency of single cream and, moving in one direction, paint a thin coat onto the tiles. Leave to dry overnight.

About Your Home Magazine

Now that all the festive fun is over and the decorations have come down your home can look a little sorry for itself, but not for long. In this issue we’ve got plenty of quick, easy and affordable ideas to give your home a fresh new look for the year ahead. While the sales are on, it’s a great time to bag a bargain, but rather than just buy an item because it’s cheap, we explain which homewares are really worth parting with your cash for in the sales (p.42). But before you go mad in the sales and bring back lots of bargain booty, now is the time to give your home a post-Christmas detox. On page 36 we show how to clear your clutter in style and discover space you never knew you had. If your bathroom and kitchen are looking past their best, turn to pages 46 and 52 to discover how easy it is to freshen them up with a few simple additions, from modern metallics to rustic touches, we’ve got lots of ideas to inspire you. If your New Year’s resolutions involve getting fitter and eating better, then turn to page 56 where we compare the latest wearable fitness trackers, while on page 12 we put personal smoothie makers to the test to see which give the best results. We’ve even given this month’s recipes a healthy spin, so you can eat well from breakfast through to supper. Finally, we’ve given our 12-page Make it Easy pull-out section a fresh new look for the New Year. Turn to page 59 for exciting craft, sewing and upcycling projects, plus the latest must haves for your craft stash.
