“HAVING THE POSSIBILITY TO SEE INSTANT FEEDBACK OF LIGHTS AND MATERIALS IS REALLY SOMETHING REMARKABLE”
AVENTADOR S
ARTIST
Damian Bilinski
SOFTWARE
Unreal Engine, 3ds Max
Senior automotive artist Damian Bilinski was able to make this image in just three days, thanks to the instant feedback of Unreal Engine’s ray tracing features. “I really enjoyed the usage of Unreal Engine itself, and the instant feedback and freedom in creativity it gave me,” Bilinski tells 3D World. “I also love cars so it is a pleasure to work on supercars like Lamborghini.”
Bilinski used Unreal Engine as a rendering software to create this high-quality and high-resolution image. “Every studio and artist is looking into it right now, trying to adopt Unreal Engine to their pipeline. Having the possibility to see instant feedback of lights and materials in the very same second is really something remarkable, something that was never possible before. Unreal Engine is the future of rendering,” he adds.
As with all art, Bilinski’s work starts with an idea. “It’s quite tricky to make interesting art from a single simple shape of metal, like a car,” he says. To plan an eye-catching piece Bilinski utilises his developing library of auto materials alongside the first round of lighting. Bilinski also emphasises the importance of understanding photographic principles, like using the proper lens and camera angles.
“Most important of all is postproduction and retouching. It is very hard to make something interesting, photorealistic or even noticeable without the proper post-production,” he explains. “I didn't mention any specific software or techniques because it really doesn't matter, you can make a piece of art in every possible software.”
