It was another foggy morning on the Sea of Japan and the few other passengers remaining on the ferry looked like nerdy Russians with Japanese anime T-shirts, or businessmen worried about their goods. We had left Russia two days before and Korea yesterday. I stepped on deck for a breath of fresh air and couldn’t believe my eyes. We were approaching land!

I’d just crossed through 25 countries, experiencing all kinds of problems with permits, refused visas, and corruption in the ex-USSR, and through temperatures ranging between 0° and 120° Fahrenheit. Of course, travel itself is the goal, but I was also pretty excited to reach a geographic location born from a simple question: “What is the farthest point I can travel from home on a motorcycle?”

Japan has a completely different culture, which I’d intentionally not researched. Now here I was, just off the coast. I was alone, because my friend and riding buddy, Matteo, had to give up in Russia for economic reasons only 3,000 miles before finally arriving in the dreamland of Japan. I don’t know why I refused to visit Japan the “normal” way, or why I waited until I was able to do it on a bike.
