We now know that smoking is incredibly bad for our health, but for centuries tobacco and cigarettes were highly prized for their supposed medicinal benefits. Nicotine acts as an appetite suppressant, and in the late 19th and early 20th centuries cigarette companies marketed their products as a weight-loss tool. One infamous example of this was the Lucky Strike advertising campaign of the 1920s which urged smokers to “Reach for a Lucky instead of a sweet”. Dieting manuals were also placed inside Lucky Strike packaging. This dubious campaign was highly successful and Lucky Strike became one of the biggest cigarette brands in the United States.
