Issue 128
This month we delve into the secrets of perhaps the most mysterious phenomena in the cosmos: black holes. Predicted in 1916 by Albert Einstein, we’ve come a long way into understanding these high-gravity objects – especially since the advent of the Event Horizon Telescope, a global network of radio dishes that sprang into action and captured the first direct image of a black hole in 2019. The composition of the supermassive object at the centre of elliptical galaxy Messier 87, which rests some 54 million light years away, excited the world and provided additional evidence for black holes’ existence. We’ve continued to build on our understanding of these fascinating objects since, as you’ll discover in our cover feature. Head over to page 14 for all of the details.
