The Arran Saltire Society’s November meeting will be a talk by Paul McAuley, recently retired from his fascinating work as conservation officer in the city of Edinburgh, looking after all the monuments there, from the spectacular – in the shape of the Scott Monument and the Ross Fountain – to the smaller but no less popular Greyfriars Bobby.
Paul has an Arran connection that goes back decades to when his interest in conservation was sparked while he was caretaker at Arran’s Heritage Museum in the 1980s. He went on from there to take conservation studies at the University of Lincoln.
As the co-author of Monumental Edinburgh, which recounts the story behind many of the stone sculptures in Scotland’s capital city, Paul will be sharing some fascinating stories behind the war memorials the length and breadth of Scotland – particularly poignant during the First World War commemorations.
