WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
Andrea Lynch: Olympian and European indoor 60m gold medallist
ON THE day AW caught up with her, Andrea Lynch had just received a card in the post from Lord Sebastian Coe to commemorate the 40th anniversary of her racing in the 100m at the 1976 Montreal Olympics. This was particularly fitting given that the sporting world was counting down the final few days until the 2016 Rio Olympics opening ceremony. “What a nice gesture,” she explained. “I went to three Olympic Games during my career and each one was one of the best memories I have. It is so nice to receive a card as memorabilia.”
A few hours before the interview, Lynch had completed a 12km hike and was just enjoying a short mid-afternoon nap. The former three-time WAAA 100m champion – who in addition to her Olympic appearances took European 60m indoor gold in 1975, European bronze in 1974 and Commonwealth 100m and 4x100m silver in 1974 – may not sprint any more, but the 63-year-old keeps herself active by doing a lot of walking either with the children on her camps or her own family. “I took some of the kids from the camp on the hike this morning,” she explains jovially. “We walked from Chelsea Bridge to London Bridge and back.”
