American Road  |  Volume 9 No. 3
The gangster-themed Autumn 2011 issue of American Road® endeavors to separate rogue fact from fiction. It begins with a ride on the notorious side: "Baby’s Last Drive"—a look at the actual route followed by Lester J. Gillis (AKA Baby Face Nelson) during his final day of life. The Baby Face Nelson Route represents the first entry in the new American Road® Originals Series—a collection of elite routes designed to lead readers on unique trips that showcase everything from history to pop culture, literature to folklore. Look for more series entries in upcoming issues.
"American Road’s Gangland Getaways" presents the latest lineup. An ensemble piece, it explores sixteen gangster-related sites, from Butte, Montana—home of the Rookwood Speakeasy—to St. Joseph, Michigan, resting place of the guns used to perpetrate the St. Valentine's Day Massacre. "Bonnie and Clyde: A Texas and Louisiana Drive" chases crime's most infamous couple along roads and places associated with their history. American Road® departments follow the Fleagle Gang across US 50, Egan's Rats on Route 66, John Dillinger along US 6, and the Lanzetti Brothers off the Lincoln Highway. "One to 101" even pays a visit to Alcatraz Island—a place Al Capone called "home" for awhile.
