A ‘mood and costume’ drawing for an opera version of Roald Dahl’s Fantastic Mr Fox, sold in the Scarfe sale at Sotheby’s auction on April 5 for £4000.
Beatrix Potter’s signed ink and watercolour Gentleman Rabbit with letter (Benjamin Bunny) sold at Sotheby’s in 2012 for £58,000.

It was the development of colour printing in the 19th century that allowed illustrative art to truly come into its own.
