Containing the original watercolour seen below right, one of just a dozen de luxe copies of the 1931, Harrap edition of Izaak Walton’s Compleat Angler, illustrated by Arthur Rackham, made a record equalling £10,000 at Gildings (18/12% buyer’s premium) of Market Harborough in a September 4 sale.
Two other such special copies, bound in full red morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe with gilt fish decorating the spine and corners of the covers, have sold at that same price in the last 12 years – both at Sotheby’s.
Featuring a pop-up tree and metal tray case, a much more modern binding is seen above right on a 2005, Gauntlet Press edition of The Halloween Tree by Ray Bradbury that made £600 in the Leicestershire sale.
