In recent years there has almost always been a representation of the quirky and distinctive (and now highly popular) watercolour bestiary produced over the course of half a century by the Austrian artist Aloys Zotl (1803-87).
Ader’s dedicated old and modern works on paper auction at Drouot on March 29 features three examples. Pictured here is his Der Grosse Pavian Simia Sphinx, 1836, measuring 15 x 19in (39 x 48cm), which carries an estimate of €60,000-80,000.
