Gay men tend to be loud mouths. But not loud enough by Stuart Milk’s standards. Stuart wants us to proclaim our presence and at the very least stand up and be counted. He believes that it’s our invisibility, bred by centuries of oppression, which encourages discrimination and violence. He points to the success of Obergefell v. Hodges, the court case that paved the way for legal same-sex marriage throughout the U.S. He says it’s a prime example of LGBT visibility changing hearts and minds and informs me, “When Ruth Bader Ginsburg, one of our Supreme Court justices, was asked why marriage equality was upheld she said, ‘Because the justices knew gay people.’”
