Up-and-coming South African actor Niza Jay Ncoyini makes his debut in Oscarnominated The Wound, a film that explores queer love and masculinity in the Xhosa community. He plays Kwanda, a closeted initiate undergoing the culture’s traditional rite of passage, guided by a caregiver who’s also closeted. It’s a sensitive subject and showing it on film is causing controversy in his home land.
Later this year, Niza is set to appear in experimental film Hello au Revoir, alongside 1,500 actors from around the world.
