The cake design was inspired by some of the ancient regalia used in the coronation ceremony, whilst incorporating contemporary design and techniques. The cake stood at 1.2m tall and was baked using 200 Duchy organic free-range eggs. Whilst inspired by the coronation regalia and historic items used in the ceremony, they wanted the design to look to the future as well as the past, using contemporary decorating techniques.
The first tier was inspired by the ancient Stone of Destiny. This stone was historically used as the seat when crowning Scottish kings, and is brought down to London from Edinburgh and placed under the coronation throne. We created a textured stone-like finish on the bottom tier to represent this, with stone elements repeating as the cake gets taller.
