LETTER OF THE WEEK
LAST year, the Top Rank-backed and heavily touted two-time Olympic gold medallist Robeisy Ramirez suffered a shock split decision defeat on his pro debut to Adan Gonzales. Since that loss he has switched trainers and reapplied himself. Last week (July 2), he gained revenge over Gonzales in Las Vegas, dominating him from start to finish and winning via unanimous verdict.
Ramirez [below] himself has admitted that he didn’t train properly for his debut and it has been reported before that he was never the most disciplined in Cuba. May this be a lesson to youngsters starting out in the sport that no matter how talented you are as a boxer, if you don’t put the work in you won’t get what you expect. It also highlights the fact that a defeat doesn’t define a fighter, so avoiding risky fights to maintain the ‘0’ shouldn’t be a priority.
