Government to ban fossil fuel boilers
As part of its bid to reach net carbon zero targets, the government intends to ban gas boiler installations in new build homes from 2025 in favour of renewable heating systems. This is prompting the likes of Octopus Energy to offer more consumer choice by training up heat pump installers. Octopus CEO and founder Greg Jackson said: “Today, they’re expensive, but we should be able to halve our price over the next couple of years and we think they’ll end up costing roughly the same as gas boilers.” If installed costs can come down to that degree, the savings in-use would make these appliances a go-to choice for many households. The industry also expects ministers to confirm a £4,000 per household incentive for those who install an eco-friendly heat pump from March 2022, as a replacement for the soon-to-close Renewable Heat Incentive.
