Householders are twice as likely to be pleased with properties built by small and medium sized enterprises (SME) than equivalents erected by big developers. The Federation of Master Builders (FMB) surveyed 2,000 homeowners who showed higher satisfaction rates with dwellings constructed by small builders. “Our research shows you are twice as likely to be very satisfied with the quality of your new home if it was built by a smaller house builder, as opposed to one of the large top 20 firms,” says FMB’s chief executive Brian Berry.

High quality homes could be built in Harrogate, including a substantial number of self-builds on serviced plots. The planning application for Flaxby Park, submitted earlier this month, stipulates the construction of residential accommodation, two primary schools and sports facilities, as well as a new rail station. The scheme’s investors were behind the Wynward Park initiative in the north east – which facilitated 60 self-build opportunities. The company expects the previous success to be replicated at a larger scale.
