Solar panels: making a DNO application
The National Grid is made up of 14 different regional district networks, which are owned by six different groups. These are known as your District Network Operators (DNOs) and they have a direct responsibility for maintaining the network to prevent power cuts, which means they have the final say over much electricity someone can supply to their property. Installing solar panels, a heat pump, an EV charging point or AC battery storage on your property means making a significant change to your energy connection that could risk a fault in the overall network. Therefore, you’re required to notify your local DNO and you may need permission prior to installing your system if the size surpasses the threshold.
