According to the government, building green homes is getting cheaper every year. The extra cost of building to Level 3 of the Code for Sustainable Homes fell from £4,458 in 2008 to £1,128 in 2010. Of course, Level 3 has been integrated into Building Regs since October 2010. And while many developers are content to simply meet minimum standards, self builders lead the way in the eco stakes. Our diarists, the Nielsens, are following the principles of Code Level 6 for their stick-built timber frame home – they have been working on the timber frame and insulation this month. This month’s other readers’ homes are packed with green innovations. The Baileys’ ultra-modern Huf Haus leads the way in showing how maximising solar gain and insulation means you can make the most of renewable tech, such as solar panels and rainwater harvesting systems. Despite their future-friendly project, the couple still faced planning problems – if you’re in the same boat, don’t miss Mike Dade’s guide to overcoming planning refusals. You’ll also find in-depth advice on everything from roof structure design to basement extensions.
And don’t miss our fantastic competitions, including your chance to win a Zip HydroTap worth £2,300. Scroll down to enter online.
