Released as a picture disc on Record Store Day 2019, its widespread availability postponed to allow for last year’s Flotsam & Jetsam rarities compilation, these 10 songs, recorded by Gabriel for films, are another reminder his voice adds poignancy to almost everything: kid’s movies, political thrillers, even Oliver Stone’s mass murder sprees. A string-adorned cover of Stephen Merritt’s The Book Of Love, from 2004 rom-com Shall We Dance, is especially moving, and – though it remains unmistakably a Randy Newman tune – Babe’s That’ll Do, with its warm brass and Gabriel’s instantly recognisable vocals, would melt the hardest of hearts.
