For all of those TV clips we’ve seen of musicians collaborating together over lockdown of late, the truth is that proper ‘real-time’ playing together has been a dream… until now. ALOHA by Elk Audio promises to do away with online latency issues to allow online musicians in multiple places, to play together “as if they were in the same room”. We expect 5G to bring us this level of instant collaboration but Elk say that current fast broadband will do the job. “Aloha creates a virtual shared studio space with options to collaborate on song production and stream performances to fans via social platforms,” they say, and while precise details are sketchy, with an unspecified “pocket sized device” required, with the backing of Ericsson, Vodafone and Verizon, it might just take off big time.
