THE STRANGERS’ TROPHY

You will recall that 1967’s pleasingly peculiar four-parter The Macra Terror finds the Doctor and his friends unmasking a bunch of supersized gas-guzzling crabs who, for reasons which are less than entirely clear, have decided to run a human colony along the lines of a Butlin’s holiday camp. With the crab infestation duly eradicated, the Hi-De-Hi vibe shows no sign of winding up: as the majorettes begin twirling their sticks in celebration, the Pilot of the colony grandly announces that, as a mark of gratitude to the Doctor and his friends, “A dance festival will be held every year in their memory, and the winners will be awarded the Strangers’ Trophy!”
