A Natural Charmer

Kevin Lindsay’s performance as Styre the Sontaran was one of the highlights of Doctor Who’s twelfth season. Sadly, this proved to be the actor’s final screen role…

In December 1964, the Australian actor Kevin Lindsay was winding up a fruitful association with the repertory company at Oldham by playing Phileas Fogg’s comic manservant, Passepartout, in Around the World in 80 Days.

After a final role as Wishee-Washee in the company’s Christmas presentation of Aladdin, he then headed south and on Tuesday 30 March 1965 made his first appearance at Watford’s Palace Theatre – in, coincidentally, another version of Around the World in 80 Days. This time, however, he was playing a couple of apoplectic colonels (Cromarty and Proctor), with Passepartout going to a young actor called Brian Miller.

“Typical Aussie, he was so relaxed, which was just what I needed.” ELISABETH SLADEN

Eight years later, this connection came in handy when Miller’s wife, Elisabeth Sladen, was cast in Doctor Who as the Third Doctor’s final companion, Sarah Jane Smith – and was naturally somewhat apprehensive about it. Noticing that his old colleague had been cast as the titular alien in Sarah Jane’s first story, The Time Warrior, Miller arranged for Lindsay to accompany his wife to the Cheshire location shoot, a journey that took place on Sunday 6 May 1973.
