Worthy soles: a tire guide

Before the rubber meets the road, there is a lot to know about these marvels of science and technology.

Technically speaking: The material composition of modern tires are synthetic rubber, natural rubber, fabric, wire, carbon black, and other chemical compounds. They are comprised of a tread and a body. The tread provides traction while the body provides containment for a quantity of compressed air.

Early versions of tires were simply bands of metal fitted around wooden wheels to prevent wear and tear. Early rubber tires were solid. Pneumatic tires are used on many types of vehicles, including cars, bicycles, motorcycles, buses, trucks, heavy equipment, and aircraft. Metal tires are still used on locomotives and railcars, and solid rubber (or other polymer) tires are still used in various non-automotive applications, such as some casters, carts, lawn mowers, and wheelbarrows.

We’ve compiled a short list of brands that can alter the way you feel behind the wheel. Whether you are running on the wear-bar and need replacements, or looking for a lower profile and more grip in the corners, these will get you down the road satisfied and safe.

The tires you choose affects your ride-quality, maneuverability, and safety… choose wisely. Your smartest options come from a knowledgable professional.
