Wheatley: “The torture and rescue of Sam Lowry in Brazil is something I saw as a kid, and it blew my mind. There are so many different things that are so smart about it — the fact that they’re in a cooling tower, the wide-angle lenses, the masks, the fact that it’s a total trap for both the character and the audience. I’d never seen that double-bluff thing where you go, ‘They’ve escaped! Oh no, they haven’t escaped!’ It hit me hard when I saw it for the first time.”
