DECEMBER 2019
From 4 December Talks Kew: The National Archives is running several free talks this month, starting on 4 December with God help the poor man in which Paul Carter will look at the history of poor law and the lives of 19th century poor ancestors using some of the newly discovered ‘pauper archive’, which came to the fore as part of The National Archives’ ‘In Their Own Write’ project in partnership with the University of Leicester. On 5 December there is a talk called Christmas in the Archives when visitors can join specialists to find out more about records relating to Christmas through the centuries; on 12 December the evening talk is The 12 Days of Christmas, which will explore Christmas traditions such as merry-making, gift giving, dressing up and the revels that entertained the Tudor and Stuart courts.
