GREEN BOW

Established in 1996, Greenbow, the group for deaf LGBT+ people, is still going strong. Peter Dunne speaks to some of the members.

In recent issues of GCN there’s been much talk about the issue of rural isolation in Ireland - of LGBT+ people feeling they couldn’t access their community, feeling apart. Meeting some of the committee members of Greenbow, they described another way of feeling isolated from your community, even in a big city such as Dublin - when you are literally communicating in a different language.

It’s a busy day in the Deaf Village in Cabra. There’s a day group for seniors filling up the large space beside the reception area and the canteen is buzzing with people. Current Greenbow secretary, Leesa Brennan, meets me and brings me into a small office to meet Dominic McGreal and Connor Desmond. With no real knowledge of sign language - I know the alphabet and the odd word here and there but nowhere near enough to hold a conversation - Leesa interprets some of what the guys have to say. Already I realise how difficult it could be to communicate if we weren’t in a small room like the one we are in and which we have to ourselves. What if we were in a crowded nightclub? That exact example comes up later in our chat.

About GCN

This month at GCN we celebrate the elder members of our fabulous LGBT+ family with an exceptional series of articles and opinion pieces. As our centrepiece, you'll find a glorious photographic celebration of individual style shot by the exceptional Babs Daly. There's a loving look at Bridie's Bar in The George, alongside an investigation of rural LGBT+ life. Greenbow fill us in on what it's like to be deaf in the LGBT+ community and we profile a member of Identity - the group for LGBT+ asylum seekers. There's also a hard-hitting piece on the rise in homophobic violence in Honduras. In light of news that Teach Solais could face closure, we speak to those whose lives it has changed for the better. Let’s rally the community and get behind the West's only LGBT+ resource centre
