Tragedy struck at Elliot Rail Junction on 28 December 1906 at 15.30, when during a blizzard the Edinburghbound North British Express collided with the stationery Dundee to Arbroath Caledonian Railway train, leaving 22 dead and 24 injured. One of the deceased was the Liberal Member of Parliament, Alexander William Black.
