Renewables: to own or not to own?
That is the question when it comes to technologies such as solar panels and biomass boilers. Should you invest or opt for the ‘free’ install offered by a growing number of companies?

"WHEN ENTERING INTO A CONTRACT THAT GIVES YOU SOMETHING FOR FREE, BE VERY CAREFUL TO KNOW WHAT YOU ARE GETTING INTO"
Ever since the introduction of the Feed-in Tariff (FiT) for electricity generation from renewables, everyone has jumped on the bandwagon. Those that could afford to buy solar panels did so, and many other owners of south-facing roofs were offered free solar panels with the incentive of free electricity. The catch was that you were effectively renting your roof to the company that installed the panels. The way this worked was that the FiT paid out a generous ‘generation’ tariff, whether you were the one using the electricity generated or not. This tariff was more than three times the cost of electricity, making it an investor’s dream. The promise of free electricity seemed too good to be true, and many homeowners eagerly signed up for free solar panels.
