Long-time readers of this magazine may still recall the story of founding Editor Peter Harris’s selfbuild which, like an elongated episode of Grand Designs, was serialised over several issues back in the mid 1990s. It was the idea of developing that plot, in the garden of his home in a Monmouthshire village, that inspired Peter – who died on 9th June, aged 68 – to launch a magazine for people interested in building their own home. By packaging the concept in a way that seemed to make it accessible to everyone, the 1990 launch of Individual Homes (as this magazine was then called) was pivotal in helping to make selfbuild the popular dream it is today.
