Doublethink in the new Scotland

Scot Goes Pop

AS WE LEAVE behind a disturbingly jingoistic ‘festival of remembrance’ marking the hundredth anniversary of one of the greatest tragedies in human history, we can already see the thirtieth anniversary of a more peaceful but equally important landmark in world history starting to appear over the horizon. While the collapse of the communist bloc in 1989 is unlikely to be anything like as widely commemorated in the UK, the date on the calendar is still bound to reawaken feelings of ambivalence among some on the Let who have always regarded the wave of democratisation across Eastern Europe as a step forward in some ways, and a step back in others. In truth, it’s hard to argue with that assessment. The early idealistic promise that ‘bourgeois democracy’ and ‘democratic socialism’ would hold parity of esteem as valid options for newly enfranchised voters proved illusory, as anything remotely recognisable as socialism, or even as old school social democracy, was quickly swept away in western Europe every bit as much as in the east.
