UNTIL THE day the sun fell from the sky, no monk of the Brotherhood of the Sleepless Night had ever gone beyond the Abbey walls. This is partly because to do so was utterly forbidden, and partly because the monks had a strong suspicion that the world outside was a strange and unpredictable place.

So had lived for centuries the followers of the Short-sighted Saint, who preached that sleep is a wasteful indulgence in the search for the Truth, and whose almost-blindness was said to have been caused by over sixty years of squinting through the dark. Only by staying awake could one ever hope to uncover the Answers.
