Summer salads are a real must in our household and so we grow and eat lots of lettuce. Always on the lookout for something new and novel to ring the changes, I came across a variety with a truly unusual story the first to be grown in space on the International Space Station. Well, what with that and the fact that it produces eye-catching red leaves that are bound to make a splash in the salad bowl, I just had to give it a try.
The plants were planted out on April 17 into well-prepared soil
GROWING THE CROP
I sowed my seeds in small batches from March and continued at monthly intervals through the summer. the seeds were sown into cell trays, one seed per cell. the first batch was sown on March 9 and kept in a frost-free greenhouse but with no additional heat and they germinated very quickly, most within seven days, and grew away well. I had sown some Little Gem alongside and the OutREDgeous did seem to germinate and grow faster.
