STORE IT

We all get gluts of fruit and vegetables sometimes but rather than waste them, use some of the many techniques to preserve and store your crops. Emma Rawlings takes a look at a few ideas

When growing your own, do you sometimes get a glut of a few crops? If you want to keep some for use in the kitchen later, there are various methods of storage for different fruit and veg. Here are some ideas which may help.

FRIDGE STORAGE

There is a lot of advice about keeping certain fruit and veg out of a fridge, especially tomatoes. This advice tends to relate to fruit and veg bought from a supermarket. Some of this produce is not ripe at purchase. If you put these in the fridge it will affect ripening. When you grow your own you tend to harvest when the crop is at its optimum ripeness and eat it quickly. We home growers don’t really need to use the fridge – we can leave the crops in the ground or on the plant and harvest on the day we are going to eat it. However, if you are not going to use it all that day, then it is worth putting in the fridge until you are ready to use it.
