The Sound of
Music is a musical with music by Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein. Many of the songs have become famous, including “Edelweiss”, “Climb Ev’ry Mountain” and “Do-Re-Mi”. The musical The Sound of Music first opened on Broadway on 16th November 1959. The production received the Tony Award for best musical, and is based on a book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse. The 1965 film version starred Julie Andrews. The story is about the Trapp family and is set in the beautiful countryside of Salzburg, in Austria. Maria (Julie Andrews) is studying to become a nun, but is sent to be the governess of the Trapp family. She’s in charge of the seven children of a naval commander, Captain von Trapp, who doesn’t like music.
