Starting up in 2016 – be among the frst people to enjoy these new wonders around the world

There are many exciting opportunities to broaden your horizons in 2016 – whether visiting US national parks for free, riding the world’s tallest tunnel slide or sleeping with lions

THIS YEAR’S BEST NEW TRAVEL EXPERIENCES

1 LAND OF THE FREE IN AMERICA’S NATIONAL PARKS

The national parks of the United States claim some of the greatest wide-open spaces in the world within their boundaries, from frozen summits to scorched deserts. The downside of visiting is that, unlike our own dear national parks, there’s a higher chance of bear attacks, and you'll possibly have to hand over a fstful of crisp notes to a smiling ranger in a stylish wide-brimmed hat to get inside. This latter aspect is changing in their centenary year, however, with all 126 fee-charging parks waiving their entrance fees for 16 days through 2016. Among them is Glacier National Park in Montana (pictured), a rugged region of alpine meadows and steep mountains snuggled against the Canadian border. In high summer, come to paddle the waters of its still lakes in a canoe, and drive the marvellous if only slightly misleadingly named Going-to-the-Sun Road, a 50-mile-long highway that slaloms its way along the slopes (and also featured in the opening scenes of The Shining). Among the many other lesser-knowns parks open for free this year are the red-rock spires of Utah’s Capitol Reef, Cape Cod National Seashore in Massachusetts with its miles of sandy beaches, and California’s craggy-featured Pinnacles National Park – America’s newest.

National Park week runs 16–24 April. For details of the other free days, see nps.gov
