Intel has introduced Thunderbolt 5, the latest version of its Thunderbolt connectivity standard, which will go live at some point in 2024. The company promises this will double the bidirectional data transfer rate from 40Gbps to 80Gbps. That should make it a more interesting change than the upgrade from Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 4, when data transfer rates remained the same.
There is also a ‘Bandwidth Boost’ feature that allows a device to transmit up to 120Gbps speeds for video content. This mode is only activated when a compatible device is attached to a high-bandwidth display.
