As the great conflict that would be known as World War II was building in Europe, the United States sat on its relatively isolated continent and the American public had no desire to get entangled in another of Europe’s interminable wars. Added to the economic toll from the Great Depression, there was little pressure, and very little money, to push for an expansion of the United States limited armed forces. In the field of armoured warfare, there were additionally differences in how to handle and attack by enemy tank forces.While some officers favoured using tanks to defend against enemy attacks, others pointed to limited budgets and claimed that anti-tank guns costing a fraction of what a tank cost could take care of an armoured assault.
