In late 1935, when most British tanks were built by Vickers- Armstongs Ltd., the company was given a specification for a small, well armoured tank armed with just one machine gun. It was to be proof against all known anti-tank weapons. It was to be ready in six months. And it was to be cheap. The result was the A11 or Infantry Tank Mark I, allegedly nicknamed Matilda after a cartoon duck of the period.
