Neoprene kit

Along with contributing editor Alice Gartland and editor Jonathan Cowie, we asked a variety of outdoor swimmers for their insights including: Gill Williams, a wild swimmer based on the Isle of Skye and retired police diver, with decades of experience putting neoprene through its paces; Mal Roberts year-round swimmer who uses gloves and socks in the winter months; Lake District based year-round swimmers and swim-runners Jenny Rice and Paul Scully; Robert Owen, a year-round skins swimmer who doesn’t normally use accessories; Polly Downes a year-round skins swimmer; and Jess Colaiaco, who is embarking on her first season of winter swimming.

In cold water it is often our extremities that feel the freeze first. A neoprene hat, gloves and socks can make all the difference, extending the length of time you can spend in the water, your swimming season and levels of enjoyment – who wants to be distracted by painful fingers, toes and shivers when there’s (hopefully) winter sunshine, blue skies and wildlife to admire? A quick google also tells me that accessorising really helps “put your personality into an outfit” – when it comes to neoprene I think that is particularly true if you are James Bond, or channelling Esther Williams in a swim bonnet.
