STAR LETTER

Waiting on the aubergine for my baba ganoush to finish baking and stealing three minutes while the puppy and the toddler entertain each other, I flicked through the August issue of Outdoor Swimmer.

I’m going to get gushy for a moment so bear with me. Being out of triathlon has really forced me to focus on open water swimming and this year I’ve grown to love it more than ever. I’m soooo competitive and while there are races to enjoy, I’ve just loved meeting so many people who couldn’t care less about how fast they can swim, they don’t care what size they are, what age they are, they just get in and swim. And swim massive distances in really cold water. People who I could beat in a race over 1km, but who can get in the water when it’s 9 degrees, with no wetsuit on, a big smile on their face. They’re maybe 20 years older than me but while they’re enjoying their hour-long swim I’m crying in the corner because the cold has got the better of me after 10 minutes yet again – even though I’m in my wetsuit.

About Outdoor Swimmer

Flicking through my Facebook feed on a weekend I am always astounded by the sheer variety of challenges swimmers around the world take on, from wild dips to awe-inspiring marathon swims. This past month Caroline Block finished just short of a two-way North Channel crossing; Chloë McCardel announced her new world record attempt – a four-way English Channel; and Sarah Thomas swam into the record books with a 104-mile swim in Lake Champlain. It often makes me feel very inadequate! But sometimes swimming is about more than just swimming This issue we look at how you can give back to the swimming community, and Becky Horsbrugh visits Bangladesh to work for a drowning prevention charity. Author Victoria Whitworth talks about the transformative power of swimming outdoors and coach Mat Hudson explains how to swim strong for life. Plus, wildlife, nutrition, training, wild swimming and reviews. Enjoy the magazine and happy swimming. Jonathan Cowie Editor
